Life brings us challenges. This is a universal human experience. From infancy until old age, every developmental stage brings its own tasks and psychological crises. Depending on our bio-psycho-social make up, sometimes we are more or less successful in coping with these challenges on our own. The moment you feel stuck, confused, or powerless to change the situation or yourself, is the right moment to seek support and turn to an experienced therapist who can understand, validate, and help you move beyond the challenge.
My name is Silvija Barisic and I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor - LCPC. "A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for" a quote by John A. Shedd is my life’s motto. Born in the former Yugoslavia, a war-torn country, I was shaped by experiences I faced both during and post-war. Those experiences did not stop me from thriving and searching for meaning, instead they propelled me forward. I finished my Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Psychology at the University of Novi Sad, Serbia, before coming to United States. In Chicago I gained Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology with specialization in Addiction Disorders from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. My own experience with being a refugee, an immigrant, as well a psychotherapist for more than 10 years , has deepened my understanding of human suffering while also teaching me that life’s adversities can make us stronger more resilient, and appreciative.
My goal is to help my client's ship leave the harbor with the functional navigating equipment needed for a more enjoyable voyage through life. Let's get your hands on your ship’s wheel!
My approach in working with my clients is based on unconditional positive regard which means I do not judge but rather create a collaborative environment where we, together, explore the motivation behind so-called maladaptive thoughts and behaviors. My expertise includes depression, anxiety, mood disorders, loss and grief, post-traumatic stress disorder, trauma, and addiction disorders. I also enjoy working with expats, immigrants, and refugees to help them during the process of assimilation and acculturation.
